Understanding the Basics of Fabric Dyeing

At Desi Roots, we offer fabric dyeing services. I have already covered fabric printing services. Dyeing is different than printing and is much simpler. In dyeing, there are no digital files or computer programs. It’s a manual job where a dyer takes the fabric and dips it in liquid fabric ink to give it the desired color.

Why would someone need fabric dyeing?

Fabric dyeing has many applications. For example, if you have a lehenga and are looking for a matching dupatta, dyeing will solve your problem.

Finding the exact shade fabric for your dress might not be possible but with dyeing, you can get the right results.

Dyeing used to be very common, at least in North India. There would be fabric dyers at every corner. However, it’s a rare art now. Many modern cities don’t have dyeing services. If you’re looking for online fabric dyeing services, we’re right here. We follow the Neelam shade card booklet (Telephone thread shade card) for color matching. It’s the best shade card and is used as a standard in the fabric industry.

How is dyeing done

The dyer uses a pot in which they add color pigments to create the right shade. The pot has hot water and the pigments are chemical colors. According to the color from the shade card, they will create the exact shade and dip the fabric in it. To ensure there are no lines or blotches, the fabric is stirred evenly.

Once the fabric is dyed evenly, it is pulled out and left to dry in the open. As you can see, it’s a manual process and does not involve complicated file-making skills as in printing.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fabric Dyeing

Let me address some most commonly asked questions about fabric dyeing

What are the different types of dyeing that can be done by Desi Roots?

We have all types of dyes, including single color dying, multiple color ombre dyeing, tie and dye fabrics, shibori dyeing, and others. You can specify your preferences while giving us the order.

Can any fabric be dyed?

A fabric has to be dyeable to be dyed. Not all fabrics will soak in the ink. Please read the product description to see if a given fabric is dyeable.

What if I don’t want to dye a dyeable fabric?

If you don’t want us to dye the fabric, you can purchase it as is. It will be delivered to you in its base color (which is generally off-white).

Can you dye colored fabrics?

We don’t dye colored fabrics. When you apply ink on a pre-colored fabric, the result is much, much different than what you expected.

What is charak?

Sometimes, a fabric might shrink just the slightest bit after dyeing. While the shrink is practically unnoticeable, you can reverse it by getting charak after dyeing. It’s a very economical process and doesn’t cost much.

What is fabric dye made of?

We use chemical dyes as they stay the longest. Colors made from natural pigments such as flowers will fade away after a couple of washes. However, chemical based dyes will stay for long.

How to order a dyed fabric?

We have several dyed fabrics in our collection. And if you can’t find the right fabric on our website, just contact us and we’ll help you out. Our Whatsapp number is readily available for our clients. Feel free to Whatsapp us at +91-8295197848.
